Why do Cobb and Saito escape limbo via suicide when their sedation was so deep that death would lead to limbo?

There are a couple of theories for this one.

1. The sedative had worn off at that point so it was safe to wake up by killing yourself.
2. Because there isn't a deeper level than Limbo when one kills himself in Limbo you simply wake up regardless of sedation.

Doesn't fit very well with the definition of "kick" on other levels, does it?
