What are the "kicks" from different levels in the final mission?

  • Level 1: Van driving off the bridge. The original plan was to make use of the impact with the barrier, but this impact was "missed" by the dreamers in Level 2. The second kick came when the van hit the water.
  • Level 2: The explosion under the elevator forces it to rocket upwards, hence simulating gravity. The moment the elevator hits the top the acceleration stops, and the characters are thrown upwards.
  • Level 3: Exploding the base of the fort should be sufficient to bring dreamers back from Level 4 (though it might be a little overkill!).  But Level 4 is Limbo, which operates by different rules, so they need more than a kick from Level 3: they need to die in Limbo as well.  (Note: assuming all this is true, it is still inexplicable why they plan to blow up the fort even before deciding to go to Level 4 to retrieve Fischer -- unless waking up under sedation requires a kick both at the level one is dreaming in and the level above.)
  • Level 4: There is no Level 5, so there are no dreamers to be "kicked" back to Level 4.  But in Limbo, you must die to change levels.  That's why Ariadne and Fischer need to die in Limbo (by falling off the building) AND get the kick from Level 3 (the exploding fortress).  Cobb intentionally stays behind in Limbo to find Saito, and drowns in the van in Level 1, causing him to lose his lucidity in Limbo.  Cobb drifts in Limbo until he finds the aged Saito, and they remind each other that they are not in Reality and presumably shoot themselves.  By this point, the dream machine has timed out, so they awaken straight to Reality.  Had they not remembered to kill themselves in Limbo, they would have presumably drifted until dying of old age, while having lost their minds in Reality.
  • Level 1 to Reality is unknown. The characters will wake up when the dream machine times-out.

This can't be entirely correct. They only wake up 3 times due to a kick. Waking up from the van level is not using any kicks. They get out of the water and talk some...
