When did Disney World open up? » Improve Q

It was during the 1960s that Walt Disney first began to purchase land for his Disney World project. Sadly, he wasn't around to see the first theme park on the site to open up in 1971. This was of course joined by a couple of hotels. Over the next few decades, more and more theme parks and resorts would be added to 'Disney World', which of course is the location that we all know and love today.

Yes, staying in a resort is more expensive, but there are a number of benefits. For example, on most days you can stay in selected theme parks beyond the scheduled closing time. Some theme parks will also open up early. At certain times throughout the year you may even find that you can eat for free, all because you stayed at one of the resorts on site.
